SUMNEYTOWN PIKE ROAD
WIDENING & BRIDGE REPLACEMENT
Since the publication of our Fall Newsletter, the
paving schedule for the area between Church Road and Beaver Street has been
amended. Nighttime paving will begin on August 31 at 7:00 pm and will
end on September 3 at 6:00 am. The following week paving operations
will be done during Tuesday and Wednesday during the day (no night work).
With respects to the bridge, the new abutment on
the south side (Merck side) was completed during a two week period which
began in late June. The construction of this abutment involved the
temporary removal of the railroad tracks, the removal of approximately 100
feet of railroad bed was rebuilt and the tracks reinstalled to avoid
prolonging the track outage. There are nearly twenty businesses in the
North Penn/Indian Valley area who utilize this rail line for the shipping of
product and raw materials.
The second abutment north side (diner side) will be
constructed in early October. This phase of the project will include
the construction of the new abutment, the demolition of the stone walls of
the existing bridge, and the installation of the new bridge. This
phase of the project will be completed during a single four week closure of
the rail line. This schedule was recently amended and approved by CSX.
During the months of July and August the Township's
contractor and associated utility companies completed the utility relocation
and the lowering of the elevation of Sumneytown Pike to accommodate the new
roadway clearance in preparation for the new bridge. This work
included the installation of curbs along the East and West approaches to the
bridge. This project is scheduled to be completed by December 30,
2010.
The Township fully understands that this project
has been an inconvenience to the general public and businesses. The
Township has worked closely and diligently with all business owners along
the corridor during this past project. However, progress often comes
with a temporary price for a long term benefit. The Township
appreciates everyone's patience during the construction of this difficult
and complex project.
