Drug Take Back Initiative
Several years ago, the Upper Gwynedd Police Department partnered with the Drug Enforcement Administration's "Prescription Drug Take Back Program". This initiative was undertaken to help stem the tide of prescription drug abuse and to help ensure that dangerous prescriptions are disposed of in a safe and environmentally friendly manner. The twice annual program allows anyone to turn in unwanted medications at the Upper Gwynedd Police Department, no questions asked. The overwhelming response prompted the department to seek approval from the DEA to hold 2 additional take backs each year. The result was quarterly take backs. In spite of the increased access to the disposal opportunities, we continued to receive individual requests to dispose of medications in between collections. Again we obtained permission to continue collecting the prescriptions at any time someone requested to do so. To make the process even more convenient for those wishing to turn in medications, the Upper Gwynedd Township Police has purchased a Drug Turn In Kiosk. The kiosk has been placed in the lobby of the police department and can be accessed during office hours between 8:30am and 4:30pm Monday through Friday and all other times by contacting the Upper Gwynedd Police Department at 215-699-5861.
We are proud to report that as of March, 2016 this program has resulted in the collection of over 655 pounds of dangerous medications.
